Judith Banham, born Grubinger

Born Vienna, Austria. Judith grew up in Angern an der March, a small village next to the Iron Curtain at the Slowakian/ Austrian border. She gained her interest in fashion, design and magazines at an early age from her mother Liesl.

At the age of 14 Judith went to Höhere Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt, a graphic design school in Vienna where she was the youngest pupil in her class. With a diploma in graphic design she got her first job at the then newly founded lifestyle magazine Wiener. Five years later she moved with the Wiener crew to Hamburg, Germany to develop the magazine Tempo with editor in chief Markus Peichl and art director Lo Breier.

In 1988 Judith went to the packaging design studio Peter Schmidt Studios, Hamburg. She worked on mass market products such as Fa deodorant, 4711 cologne, Leibnitz cookies and many chocolate brands as well as corporate design and book design.

Going back to her main passion of magazine and book design, Judith started freelancing in 1994. As an independent freelancer she was commissioned for jobs such as the art direction for Konrad, a computer magazine, and BMW Magazin, as well as book covers for numerous authors of the German literature movement "Pop Literatur."

In 2000 Judith moved to Munich, Germany for the art direction of AD Architectural Digest.

While in Munich, in 2001, Judith partnered with Tom Ising and photographer Martin Fengel to establish Herburg Weiland, a successful graphic design agency. While there, clients included Süddeutsche Zeitung, Swiss Re, Aktion Mensch, and Freundin. She also handled the art direction for the literature magazine Der Freund in Kathmandu, Nepal, and BMW Magazin in Munich.

In 2006 Judith moved to San Francisco, California. For the past two years, with much notoriety, she continues as art director for the German magazine Maxim Fashion. She has designed the books Die totale Erinnerung/ The Ministry of Truth and Breites Wissen/ The Curious World of Drugs and Their Friends. She has also designed the social network web site I Like My Style, and has done corporate and web design for 711rent, including many other projects.

2008 marks the opening of the design firm MIDDLECOTT with her husband Brook Middlecott Banham.

Brook Middlecott Banham

Brook was born in Abilene, Texas in 1973 by a Texan mother and a British father. Brook adopted his fathers passion of cars, and his mothers artistic talents and started drawing cars at the age of three. To the horror of his mother his very first word was Pontiac.

In December 1988, the Banham family moved to the United Kingdom. Brook was educated in boarding school, and by 1993 he attained his GCSE and A-level exams for college. He was accepted in 1994 to one of Europe's best undergraduate car design programs at Coventry University, UK. During his university education, Brook spent some years working as a graphic designer in the Formula 1 and motorsport racing industry where he did graphics for Stewert Grand Prix (before it turned to Jaguar Racing), Jordan Grand Prix and the Honda Superbike Team. While in college he participated in sponsored projects with Ford and Lea Francis. Brook graduated in 2000 at top of his class with a Transport Design Bachelor's of Arts Degree (Hon).

2000 Brook landed his first industrial design job as a footwear designer at Fila Sport SpA. He lived just outside Venice, Italy for one year before moving back to the U.K.. From London he continued working for Fila designing shoes and studying fashion trends on a freelance basis for four more years thereafter. Brook was a finalist in Peugeot Design Contest in 2001.

In 2002, Brook got a car design job in Zell am See, Austria, where he worked on projects for BMW and Adidas. He then moved north to Munich, Germany where he took a job with Puma designing core running shoes. While at Puma he won a place in the 2002 Michelin Challenge Design. His work for this competition was shown in NAISES Auto Show, Detroit, Michigan. He also earned a top four placing in an MGB redesign contest sponsored by MG World Magazine.

While in Munich Brook started design partnership Banham-Wellner with architect Mathiew Wellner. Jobs included more work for Fila and new clients Lugs, NY and Power Athletic, Canada.

In 2004, Brook moved to San Francisco, California. He started working for Astro Studios where he still continues to freelance today. After having established Brook Banham Design in 2005, he has since worked for many clients including New Balance, Decathlon (FR), Mattel/ Hot Wheels, Frog Design, Pentagram Design, Battenfeld Technologies, Evolution Studios (UK), Acme Made and Kappa (Italy).

2006 Brook started part-time teaching Design Drawing for the California College of Art (CCA).

2008 marks the opening of the design firm MIDDLECOTT with his wife Judith Grubinger Banham.
